With November in full swing we had to go ahead and choose a dang book! Since I am bossy, we went with the next book on my reading list but I think that everyone will find that this selection will make for some interesting and lively discussion. PLUS it was made into a movie and maybe we could all make a date to go to it and then have drinks afterward and argue the finer points about the casting of characters, what we imagined to be very different when we were reading the book, and so on.
OH, the book! So in case you didn't hear/see me proclaiming about it on FB (sorry for that very long thread), the book is "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro. It's the same author who wrote "Remains of the Day" - a book that was also made into a movie.
So far, I am loving it. It's a slow starter and very nuanced so if you get two chapters in and find yourself thinking that nothing will ever happen in this book, just stick with it. It gets good. And a little creepy. And morally shifty....OK I won't give away too much. This trailer will do that for me.
I use GoodReads to keep track of my reading lists, etc. Join me there if you wish! Then we can look at each others libraries! Geekin' out on the 'net! But if you are looking for a copy and don't want to buy one(they are like 7 bucks on Amazon), might I suggest using Paperback Swap through GoodReads (or on its own)?
Finally we need to figure out a date for discussion. I would love to host it at my house but if we do it there and you guys want me at the meeting, it has to be before November 30th because I am skipping town then. So let's go to the comments section with the dates that might work for everyone. My favored date is November 28th which is a Sunday night and will give everyone (I think?) enough time to finish the book.
Is anyone allowed to join this group? This is next on my list, too.
ReplyDeleteI still have to buy/read the book. My plan was to buy it during my lunch hour at work today buuuut I ended up working through lunch. I think I'll head down to the B&N downtown and get it there tomorrow. I tried to buy it on half.com last week and after a week of waiting I found out today that they denied me (and by denied I mean they refunded my money) which lead me to believe they didn't have it after all. So basically I don't want to wait anymore and will just buy it for a normal price. Oh and yes, I can club it up on the 28th. I will just be getting back in town from TG with the fam in IA, but would make a point to come back in time for book club.
ReplyDeleteI just finished the SPS book club book so whoohoo for me, I finished a book! I requested to reserve this book at the library when it was first decided to read this book and see that I am #15 of 22 in line and it doesn't look promising that I'd even get the book by 11/28...boo to that. I really would like to do this so I'll go buy it on lunch today and do my best to read it by the meeting time. I am not sure that I'd be able to be back in town early enough to meet up on Sunday though. Is there any chance we could do it on Monday evening?
ReplyDeleteI could do it Monday evening but I am really hoping to give myself some last minute time before leaving to do....last minute things. We leave for Paris is the next morning.
ReplyDeleteThe other option would be to give everyone a little more time and I could host like Wed. the 15th of Dec. so then we could pick the next book then and have the Dec. book meeting in January.
I completely understand. In that case I vote for the 12/15 option however if more people can make the 11/28 that's cool too I'll just plan on doing the next book.
ReplyDeleteI think 11/28 is going to be tough for Courtney too I guess...I may have to post a poll.
ReplyDeletewell shoot...I was hoping sooner than later. I just picked up the book today!
